A NOC ENGINEER

Follow our NOC Team Leader, Raf, on a typical night shift for an engineer at our 24/7/365 data centre in Kent.

A Day (Night) in the Life of a NOC Engineer

Network Operations Center (NOC) engineers are responsible for ensuring that computer networks run smoothly and that customers have uninterrupted access to online services. A typical NOC engineer’s day (or night) can be filled with a plethora of tasks, from monitoring the network to troubleshooting issues and responding to alerts.

The workday of a NOC engineer typically begins with reviewing logs and checking inbox for any new messages. The engineer then reviews network traffic, interfaces, and equipment statistics to ensure everything is running smoothly. NOC engineers must be proficient in using monitoring tools such as Nagios, SolarWinds, and Wireshark. They then move on to handling service requests and support tickets that have come in since their last shift.

Once the NOC engineer reviews service requests, they will decide how urgent it is to fix each issue before determining what to tackle first. This involves prioritizing tasks based on the severity of the problem, the risk it poses, and the resources required to resolve it. The NOC engineer must also communicate with the end-users, vendors, and other IT departments to resolve any issues.

NOC engineers must be well-trained in incident management processes and escalation procedures. In case of significant network outages or security incidents, they must coordinate with other IT teams to develop a response plan and communicate status updates to management and customers. NOC engineers can quickly escalate service requests that need a higher level of expertise or resources.

The NOC engineer works closely with the IT team, including developers, system administrators, and other network engineers. These groups will often communicate with each other to resolve complex issues, share information, and improve overall network performance.

Throughout the workday (or night), NOC engineers must document their actions and maintain an up-to-date knowledge base of network events, diagnoses, solutions, and troubleshooting tips. All this documentation is essential for future engineers or analysts to figure out what happened, what caused it, and how to prevent it from happening again.

In conclusion, being a NOC engineer is a challenging job, and it requires the right combination of technical skills, analytical thinking, and communication abilities. It’s a 24/7 job that keeps the internet running, and it requires constant vigilance and expertise to keep the network healthy. So, next time you’re browsing the internet, take a moment to appreciate the hard work and dedication of the NOC engineer who delivers the service that makes it possible.
