Engineer and YouTuber, James Hobson, otherwise known as “The Hacksmith,” is the mastermind behind this incredible creation. Hobson has been experimenting with various lightsaber builds for years, but the protosaber is by far his most impressive work.
The protosaber is a three-foot-long blade made of tungsten, with a 4000-degree plasma stream burning through the center. The plasma is contained within a magnetic field that keeps the blade stable and prevents it from melting. And while the protosaber isn’t technically a lightsaber, it comes incredibly close to resembling the iconic Star Wars weapon.
Hobson and his team have been working on creating the protosaber for over two years, and the result is truly remarkable. The team had to overcome numerous challenges, from keeping the blade stable to ensuring it was safe to use.
At four thousand degrees, the plasma stream is exceptionally hot and could cause serious injury if not handled correctly. The team was careful to include an emergency shutoff button to disable the plasma stream in case of an emergency.
While the protosaber is undoubtedly a fascinating feat of engineering, it’s not something anyone can get their hands on just yet. The cost of building the protosaber was incredibly high, with Hobson estimating that the blade alone cost over $7500 to construct.
Moreover, even if cost weren’t an issue, Hobson and his team will not be selling any prototypes to the public. The protosaber represents a culmination of years of work and experimentation, and as such, its creators want to ensure that it remains a singular creation and not mass-produced for profit.
The protosaber has been featured in numerous online videos and news articles, generating a lot of interest from Star Wars fans and technology enthusiasts alike. The question on everyone’s minds now is whether or not the protosaber will inspire other inventors to create similar devices or if The Hacksmith’s creation will forever remain one of a kind.
Either way, one thing is for sure: the protosaber is a significant achievement that may very well inspire future generations of engineers and inventors to push the boundaries of what they can create.
