My Regrets as a Computer Science Student

Computer Science Student

Back when I was a computer science student, there are a few things I could’ve done differently to give myself a better experience – things I could’ve done to learn more and improve my skills – things I wish I knew. In this video, I refer to those things as regrets because I didn’t do them.

As a computer science student, I have had my fair share of challenges in my academic journey. However, amidst the accomplishments and successes, I have also experienced some moments of regret. Looking back, there are certain things that I wish I had done differently to make the most of my college experience.

One of my biggest regrets is not networking enough. While I had a small group of friends with whom I frequently worked on projects and assignments, I know that there were many other like-minded individuals with whom I could have formed relationships. I now realize that networking is crucial in any field, not just for future job prospects, but also for personal growth and development through learning from other people’s skills and experiences.

Another regret is not taking more non-technical courses. As a computer science major, I was heavily focused on coding and the technical aspects of my degree. However, I now wish I had taken more courses in other fields, such as psychology, philosophy, and business. These would have helped me develop a more well-rounded perspective and understanding of the intersection of technology and society.

Additionally, I regret not taking more risks in my projects and assignments. As a perfectionist, I tend to stick to safe options and not experiment with new and potentially challenging ideas. While this may have helped me get good grades, it limited my creativity and ability to think outside the box. I now understand that taking risks is essential in learning and making progress, and I wish I had done more of it during my college years.

Another regret is not attending more conferences and events related to my field of study. While I did attend a few events, I now realize that these are valuable opportunities to learn about emerging trends, connect with industry experts, and build professional relationships. Attending a few more would have helped me prepare better for my future career and also allowed me to experience various networking events.

Lastly, I regret not seeking more help and guidance from my professors and mentors. As a student, I was often too shy to approach them and ask for advice or feedback. However, looking back, I now understand that professors and mentors are there to help us succeed and to guide us through challenging times. Seeking more guidance during my college years would have helped shape my academic path and improved my overall performance.

In conclusion, as a computer science student, I have had my share of regrets. Not networking enough, not taking more non-technical courses, not taking risks in my projects and assignments, not attending enough events, and not seeking more guidance are some of my most significant regrets. I hope that by opening up about my regrets, future computer science students can learn from my experiences and make the most of their academic journey.
